Where it comes from

The story of Jeyson

Jason sailed for the golden fleece in the oldest Greek stories, and the name appears in the New Testament too, carried by a Greek-speaking Jewish Christian, which is how it entered Christian use. English-speaking countries made it enormously popular in the nineteen-seventies. Spanish-speaking families in Latin America adopted it soon after and spelled it for their own orthography, since Spanish has no soft j and the vowel needed writing out: Jeyson, Yeison and Jeison all render the English sound in Spanish letters. The name arrived in American records from both directions at once.

Meaning

healer

Greek Iason, from iasthai, to heal. The same root gives iatros, a physician, which English keeps inside psychiatry and pediatrics.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jeyson went to 20 boys in 2025, but Jeison is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 49, which makes it the 879th most-given boys’ name of the year — 3,978 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 34,859 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 85,404 for Jeyson itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It carries a settled Greek meaning that can be stated in one word.
  • It bridges English-speaking and Spanish-speaking households without changing its sound.
  • The name behind it is known everywhere in the Americas.
What to consider
  • Jason is the standard English spelling and will be written instead on almost every form.
  • Jeyson, Yeison and Jeison all render the same sound, so records within one family may differ.
  • English speakers read the ey as a possible long e and sometimes say JEE-son at first.
