The story of Jersie
Norse settlers named the Channel Islands, and Jersey kept its Norse ending through nine hundred years of French and English rule. The island's knitters gave English the word for a close-fitting woolen garment by the sixteenth century, its cattle gave the world a dairy breed, and an English colony in America took the name for a whole province. By the time Jersey reaches American given names in the late twentieth century it is a word with four independent lives, and the respelling to Jersie is the step that separates it from all of them, because no map, no shirt and no cow is spelled this way. Jersie's best year on record is 2007.

of Jersey, an island whose name ends in the Norse word for island
The -ey of Jersey is Old Norse ey, an island, which is secure; the first element is not. Proposals include a Norse personal name such as Geirr and a survival of the Roman Caesarea. The English word jersey, meaning the knitted wool cloth and then the garment, is taken directly from the island, which was a woolen-goods producer. The -ie spelling of this name is modern and carries no meaning.

The Liliane test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jersie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Liliane climbed just as high around 1916, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Liliane's path sketches the road Jersie is walking now.
