Where it comes from

The story of Jeremia

Jeremiah preached in Jerusalem through the last decades before the Babylonian conquest of 587 BC, told the city it would fall, was imprisoned, thrown into a cistern and generally disbelieved, and was right. The book bearing his name is the longest in the Bible by word count and includes some of its most personal passages, in which the prophet complains directly to God about having been given the job. Lamentations, five poems on the destruction of the city, was traditionally attributed to him. From that came French jeremiade in the eighteenth century and English jeremiad, a prolonged lamentation about the times, which American historians later adopted as a technical term for a whole genre of Puritan sermon. So a prophet's name became a literary category and then a mild insult, without anyone consulting him.

Jeremia is a spelling of Jeremiah, Hebrew Yirmeyahu, generally read as Yah exalts or Yah loosens, from a root that could mean either; the derivation is disputed. He is the prophet of the fall of Jerusalem and the traditional author of Lamentations. The peak of this spelling is 1978.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names.
