The story of Jeremi
Jeremiah is the prophet of the fall of Jerusalem, and his book and the Lamentations traditionally ascribed to him gave English the word jeremiad. The name passed into every Christian language, and Polish produced Jeremi. Jeremi Wisniowiecki, a prince of the Commonwealth who fought in the Cossack wars of the 1640s and whose son became king of Poland, is the reason the name is familiar there; Henryk Sienkiewicz made him a central figure in With Fire and Sword, one of the most read Polish novels ever written. In America, Jeremi appears both among Polish-descended families and as a spelling of Jeremy with the y traded for an i, which was a widespread device in the 1970s.
Meaningscholars disagree
Yahweh will raise up; or Yahweh will loosen
Hebrew Yirmeyahu combines a verb with the divine name, and the verb is the difficulty. The root r-m-h can mean to raise or exalt, giving 'Yahweh exalts'; a different root reading gives 'Yahweh loosens' or 'Yahweh throws down', which suits a prophet of destruction rather better. Both are seriously proposed and neither has won. The second element, -yahu, is certain: it is the name of God.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jeremi went to 15 boys in 2025, but Jeremy and Jeremih are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 1,182, which makes it the 282nd most-given boys’ name of the year — 5,579 places above the chart.
About 1 boy in 1,445 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 113,872 for Jeremi itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
