Jeremih
Masculine · “Yahweh will raise up”
Jeremih is Jeremiah with the last two letters swapped, and it has a single, datable cause. The singer Jeremih released his first album in 2009 and had a top-five single that year; American use of this exact spelling appears immediately afterwards and peaks in 2011. Almost no other name in the modern record has a cleaner attribution.

The story of Jeremih
Jeremiah prophesied the fall of Jerusalem and lived to see it, and the Book of Lamentations traditionally ascribed to him gave English the word jeremiad for a prolonged complaint. The name has been in English use since the Reformation and had a strong American revival from the 1970s. The respelling is entirely modern: Jeremih Felton, performing as Jeremih, released Birthday Sex in 2009 and the album that followed reached the top ten. The birth-name record shows the spelling arriving with him and rising for two years — a pattern that names spread by a single performer reliably produce, and one that usually falls as quickly as it climbs.

Yahweh will raise up; or Yahweh will throw down
Hebrew Yirmeyahu joins a verb to the divine name, and the verb is the difficulty. One reading takes the root as 'to raise, to exalt', giving 'Yahweh exalts'; another takes it as 'to loosen, to hurl', giving 'Yahweh throws down' — which suits a prophet of catastrophe rather better. Both are seriously proposed. The -yahu ending is certain and is the name of God. The transposed final letters change nothing about any of this.

About 1 boy in 1,445 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 113,872 for Jeremih itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Thom test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jeremih's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Thom climbed just as high around 1948, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Thom's path sketches the road Jeremih is walking now.
Jeremih sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
