The story of Jeovanni
Italian names are common across Latin America because Italian migration to Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Mexico was enormous between 1880 and 1930, and because Italian and Mexican television have shared audiences for decades. Giovanni traveled with them. The trouble is orthographic: in Italian, gi before a vowel spells the sound at the start of the English word gem, while in Spanish the letter g before e or i spells a harsh h, and the sound Italian writes with gi has no settled Spanish spelling at all. Spanish-speaking parents therefore reach for j or y, and the result is a name with half a dozen competing forms in the American data, all pronounced the same. The doubled n is kept from the Italian, where it is a genuinely long consonant, even though English and Spanish both say it short.
Meaning
Hebrew Yohanan, Yah is gracious
Giovanni is the Italian form of John, from Latin Iohannes, Greek Ioannes, Hebrew Yohanan, a sentence meaning Yah has been gracious. The respellings Jeovanni, Geovanni, Yovani and Jovani do not change the name; they record different attempts to write the Italian sound with Spanish letter values. The peak is 1998.
