The story of Jazz
The word appears in print first in baseball writing on the American west coast, meaning energy or pep, and only afterwards attaches to the music coming out of New Orleans. Musicians of that first generation disliked it. It has since become one of the small number of American words borrowed unchanged into nearly every language on earth. Its use as a given name is recent and belongs to a small group of music words — Jazz, Blues, Lyric, Cadence — used for both sexes.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The origin is genuinely unknown and much studied. Documented early uses in California sportswriting predate the musical sense; proposed sources include West African languages, Creole French and American slang, and none has been established. What is certain is that the word attached itself to the music around 1915.

The Loreto test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jazz's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Loreto climbed just as high around 1929, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Loreto's path sketches the road Jazz is walking now.
Jazz sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

Where Jazz is headed
Jazz should hold steady through 2030 — the curve is flat, and flat curves are the most predictable kind. Its history is short or jumpy, though, so read this as a sketch rather than a promise.
