Jazz
Feminine · “American English jazz”
Jazz is given to both — 622 girls and 933 boys since 1880. See Jazz as a boy nameSee other names given to both
Nobody knows where jazz comes from, and the earliest citations are not about music. The word turns up in California baseball writing in 1912 meaning pep or energy, moves to Chicago with the music around 1915, and every proposed etymology since has failed. It is one of the best documented and least explained words in American English.

The story of Jazz
The search for the origin of jazz is a small industry and its failure is instructive. Etymologies have been proposed from Wolof, from Mandinka, from Arabic, from French jaser, to chatter, from the names of musicians called Jasbo or Charles, and from a supposed Creole word for sexual activity. Each has been examined and none survives contact with the earliest citations, which are about baseball and about vigor in general, not about music or about sex. What the record shows is a slang word of unknown origin appearing in California sports pages in 1912, spreading east, and attaching to a music that had been played for some years without a name. That the word arrived after the music is itself worth knowing: the musicians did not name what they were doing, journalists did, and several of the pioneers disliked the word.
Meaningnot established
American English jazz, origin unknown
The earliest known uses are from 1912 and 1913 in West Coast baseball writing, where jazz means energy, spirit or a lively quality. Its application to music is documented from about 1915 in Chicago. Proposed origins include West African, Creole French, Arabic and various personal names, and none is supported by the citation record. The word's history has been studied intensively and remains unresolved. It peaks as an American given name in 1994.

The Mellany test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jazz's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Mellany climbed just as high around 1963, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Mellany's path sketches the road Jazz is walking now.
Jazz sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
