The Jay- opening deserves attention because of how fast it grew. Before about 1960 it barely exists in American naming outside Jay itself. By the 1990s it is one of the two or three most productive elements in the whole system, generating Jayden, Jaylen, Jayla, Jamari, Janiya, Jayana and a hundred more, for both sexes, at a rate that made Jayden the most popular boys' name in several states. What drove it is partly sound — the j is one of the few consonants English uses sparingly at the start of names, so it reads as distinctive — and partly the way it attaches cleanly to almost any second element. Jayana pairs it with Ana, which is about as established a second element as exists. The peak in 2008 sits in the middle of the Jay- decade.

Ana and Anna descend from Hebrew Ḥannāh, grace or favor, a settled reading. The Ja- and Jay- opening is a productive American prefix with no established meaning, seen across Jamal, Jalen, Jayden, Jaquan and hundreds more. Jayana as a whole is not recorded outside American use, and a separate Sanskrit jaya, victory, is sometimes offered without evidence that it produced this name.
