Krissa is built from a nickname rather than from a name — the short form of a long religious name, treated as a stem and given an ending of its own. That is a common way for new names to appear, and it leaves the original a long way behind.

Where it comes from

Our story of Krissa

The front of this name has had an odd career in English. Kris arrived as a short form of a Greek word meaning anointed, and then German speakers in Pennsylvania brought over the Christkindl — the Christ child, who in their tradition brought the presents — and English ears turned that into Kris Kringle, a jolly bearded man who is not a child at all and has nothing to do with the original. A religious term became a nickname, the nickname became a character, the character became a synonym for someone else entirely, and the sound went on being available to parents the whole time. This name is a later stop on that same road: the piece that was left over, used as a beginning rather than an end.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The long names behind Kris — Christina, Christine, Kristen — mean a follower of Christ, and a name built on the clipped form does not straightforwardly inherit that. What it has is a shape: a familiar front, an ending chosen for sound, and a spelling that places it in one American decade.

Pronouncing Krissa

KRISS-uh

Two syllables, stress at the front. The doubled s keeps the vowel before it short, which is one of the few English spelling rules that holds.

Krissa sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1970, with 32 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Krissa sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, crisp and immediately sayable.
  • The spelling is phonetic and survives being dictated.
  • It sits near several familiar names without being any of them.
What to consider
  • Chrissa, Crissa and Krista are all nearby and hers will be written as one of them.
  • The name is built from a nickname, so the long form does not really stand behind it.
  • The K dates the spelling to a particular American stretch.
