Our story of Javaughn
Welsh had no fixed surnames until the English administration imposed them, so it needed other ways to tell people apart, and the commonest was a descriptive tag. Fychan, the younger or smaller, marked the son in a household where father and son shared a name, and Hen, the old, marked the father. Others were Coch, red, giving Gough; Llwyd, grey, giving Lloyd; Du, black, giving Dee; Gwyn, white or fair, giving Wynne. When surnames were finally frozen these tags became family names, which is why so many Welsh surnames are adjectives rather than patronymics. Vaughan is the most successful of them in America, and by the 1990s it was being used as a suffix in coined names, a Welsh comparative doing service as a decorative American ending several removes from anyone who knew what it meant.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Javaughn as a whole has no inherited etymology. Its second element is genuine: Vaughan is Welsh fychan, the mutated form of bychan, small or younger, used to distinguish a son from a father of the same name and later fixed as a surname. The Ja- prefix is American and carries no meaning. The augh spelling is an English convention for the aw sound, as in taught. The peak is 1997.
