The story of Janella
The feminines of John arrived in English in waves. Old French made Jehanne from Johannes, and Middle English took it as Jone, which became Joan and was one of the commonest women's names in medieval England. A later borrowing of the same French form gave Jane. Scottish took the French Jeanne and produced Jean, which stayed Scottish for centuries before becoming general. Janet is a Scottish diminutive of the same, with the French -et ending. Irish took Eoin, the male form, and made Siobhan from the Norman French Jehanne, which English respells as Chevonne or Shavonne. So English has Joan, Jane, Jean, Janet, Janice, Sinead and Siobhan, all of them the same Hebrew sentence about divine graciousness, and no speaker treats any two of them as versions of each other.
Meaning
Hebrew Yochanan, God is gracious
Janella joins the Jan stem to the -ella ending. Jan is a clip of Jane or Janet, both feminines of John, from Hebrew Yochanan, Yah is gracious. The -ella ending is the Latin diminutive that gives Isabella, Marcella and Estella. The compound is American and carries no meaning of its own. It peaks in 1971.

The Arlyce test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Line the two peaks up, and Arlyce's path sketches the road Janella is walking now.
Janella sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
