Where it comes from

The story of Janell

Jane had been one of the plainest names in English for four hundred years by the time the twentieth century arrived, which is exactly the problem the -elle ending solved. Adding a Romance diminutive to a monosyllabic English name was a standard American move of the 1940s to 1970s and it produced Janelle, Janell, Jenelle, Danelle and a dozen others; the parent name stays visible, the sound modernizes, and no new name has to be invented. Janell's best year in the record is 1979, and the whole family declined together in the 1980s as the fashion moved on to endings borrowed from surnames instead.

Meaning

God is gracious, with a French diminutive ending

Jane descends from Latin Johanna, the feminine of Johannes, from Hebrew Yohanan, God is gracious. The suffix -elle or -ella is the Romance diminutive, and the name means a small or affectionate Jane. The dropped final e in this spelling is an American simplification and changes nothing.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Janell went to 18 girls in 2025, but Janel is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 26, which makes it the 934th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,391 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 61,818 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 89,293 for Janell itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

  • The -ell family is closely dated to the 1960s and 1970s in American ears.
