Where it comes from

The story of Janel

The action of ejectment required a real dispute between real tenants, so the courts supplied imaginary ones: John Doe, the fictitious plaintiff, and Richard Roe, the fictitious defendant, whose names appear in English case reports for centuries. The name was chosen for the same reason plain Jane was: John and Jane were so common that they meant anybody. American practice inherited the pair and still uses them for unidentified persons, which is why an unnamed body is a Jane Doe. Jane itself is the English feminine of John, one of the dozens of female forms that name produced across Europe, and Janel adds the French diminutive ending that English borrowed and made productive in the twentieth century.

Meaning

Hebrew Yohanan, Yah is gracious

Janel joins Jane, the English feminine of John, to the -elle ending borrowed from French. Jane comes through Norman French Jehanne from Latin Iohanna and Hebrew Yohanan. The peak is 1971.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Janel went to 8 girls in 2025, but Janell is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 26, which makes it the 934th most-given girls’ name of the year — 9,983 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 61,818 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 200,908 for Janel itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
