Jamaria
Feminine
Jamaria is given to both — 1,327 girls and 42 boys since 1880. See other names given to both
Jamaria is a prefix attached to a whole name rather than to a suffix, and that is a distinct construction. Most Ja- names take a fragment — Jalynn, Jaslin, Jayla — but Jamaria takes Maria intact, one of the most-used women's names in human history, and puts a syllable in front of it.

Our story of Jamaria
Prefix naming has two modes and they produce different results. In the common mode, the prefix joins a fragment — a -lyn, a -sha, an -iyah — and neither piece is a name, so the whole is entirely new. In the rarer mode, the prefix joins a complete existing name, and the result is legible in a way the first is not: Jamaria contains Maria, Jamichael contains Michael, Deandre contains Andre, Latoya contains Toya. This second mode is the older of the two and it does something specific — it lets a child carry a family name while still having a name of her own, which is exactly what an honor name has always been for. Jamaria peaked in 2004, and its structure is a great deal more traditional than its date suggests.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Maria carries a real if disputed meaning — Hebrew Miryam, variously read as bitter, beloved or rebellious, with none established. Ja- carries none; it is a prefix syllable. The compound as a whole has no meaning, because prefixing a name does not modify it in any language English draws on. Sources that gloss Jamaria as a Maria variant are overstating the connection.

Pronouncing Jamaria
juh-MAR-ee-uh
Four syllables with the stress on the second and the first vowel reduced almost to nothing. Some speakers say jah-mah-REE-ah with a Spanish rhythm, which moves the stress and gives Maria its own shape back.

The Marysol test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jamaria's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Marysol climbed just as high around 1970, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Marysol's path sketches the road Jamaria is walking now.
Jamaria sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Maria is available inside it as a complete, historic short form.
- The four-syllable shape gives it real formality.
- The prefix-plus-whole-name construction is older and more traditional than it appears.
- It has no meaning as a compound, whatever Maria means on its own.
- The stress placement varies between English and Spanish speakers.
- Jamaria, Jamariah and Jemaria all appear in the records.
