Where it comes from

The story of Marysol

María de la Soledad is one of the Spanish Marian titles, and Spanish naming abbreviates such titles freely: Marisol, Maribel from María Isabel, Maricarmen from María del Carmen, Marilú from María Luz. Marisol became an ordinary Spanish name and was carried further by the child star Pepa Flores, who performed as Marisol from 1960 and was one of the biggest figures in Spanish cinema of the decade. American records show Marisol and Marysol with Hispanic families through the twentieth century, with Marysol peaking in 1970 — inside her run of films.

Meaningscholars disagree

Sea and sun; or Mary of solitude

Two readings compete. Marisol is widely understood as mar y sol, sea and sun, which the letters support directly. It is also given as a contraction of María de la Soledad, Mary of Solitude — a Marian title referring to her solitude after the crucifixion — which is a documented Spanish devotional name. Both are current and the Marysol spelling, with the y written as a letter rather than a word, leans toward the first.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Marysol went to 22 girls in 2025, but Marisol is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 445, which makes it the 554th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,000 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 3,612 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 73,058 for Marysol itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both readings are pleasant and both are genuinely Spanish.
  • Mari and Sol are both ready-made short forms.
  • Three open syllables are easy for any speaker.
What to consider
  • Marisol is the standard spelling and will be written for it.
  • The two possible readings are quite different in register.
  • English speakers put the stress in the wrong place.
