Our reading is that the schwa explains more about modern American spelling variation than anything else. English reduces every unstressed vowel toward the same neutral sound, which is why the second syllables of nation, gallon, siren, Britain and Latin all rhyme despite being spelled five ways. A writer choosing how to spell an unstressed syllable has no phonetic guidance at all, because the sound does not point to a letter. So the choice becomes free, and in names it becomes expressive: -en reads as neutral, -on as masculine, -an as slightly older, -yn as modern and slightly feminine, -in as plain. None of them is audible. The whole enormous apparatus of respelling in the -aden family, six spellings and hundreds of thousands of children, rests on the fact that English has one vowel it cannot write.
