The story of Jadalynn
Both of the stone's names record the same medical belief. Spanish observers in Mexico saw jade used as a remedy for kidney and bladder trouble and called it piedra de ijada, the loin stone; French took it as l'ejade, which was misdivided as le jade, and English took jade from French. Meanwhile European mineralogists named one of the two minerals sold as jade nephrite, from Greek nephros, a kidney, for exactly the same reason. So a stone valued in China for three thousand years and in Mesoamerica for as long acquired two European names, from two languages, both derived from a therapeutic claim that neither culture had made central. The other jade mineral, jadeite, was named later and back-formed from the word. The misdivision that produced le jade from l'ejade is the same process that gave English an apron from a napron.
