The stone came to Europe from the Americas in the sixteenth century with a Spanish name recording what it was thought to be good for: piedra de ijada, the stone of the flank or loin, applied to the side to treat kidney disorders. French took it as le jade, apparently by misdividing l'ejade, and English took the French. Meanwhile mineralogists named one of the two minerals sold as jade nephrite, from Greek nephros, kidney, for exactly the same belief. So both the popular word and the technical one record a medical theory nobody now holds. Chinese and Mesoamerican traditions, which valued the stone far more highly and for far longer, named it for none of that. Jadalyn peaks in America in 2007.
