Our story of Leandrea
Jules Léotard was a French acrobat who trained over his father's swimming pool, worked out how to swing between bars, and effectively invented the flying trapeze act in the eighteen-fifties. He performed in a one-piece knitted garment he had designed so that an audience could see the body working — he wrote, with no modesty at all, that a man wanting to be admired should put on a natural garb. The costume was called a maillot in his lifetime and acquired his name only after his death, when it was already standard among acrobats and had been picked up by dancers. He is also the daring young man on the flying trapeze of the music-hall song, written about him while he was performing in London. He died at about thirty, of an infection.

As a feminine of Leander it joins the Greek words for a lion and a man. As an American build it is a free front attached to Andrea, and means nothing. Both patterns were in use in the decades this spelling appears, and nothing chooses between them.

Fashion outlook
Leandrea sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Three short forms come out of it and none sounds like the others.
- The stress falls where an English reader expects it to.
- It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
- Leandra, Leandria and Liandrea are all recorded and will be written for it.
- The syllable count is unstable, so the name is said two ways.
- Which of the two possible origins applies is not recorded.
