Where it comes from

The story of Jacksen

The -kin suffix entered English from the Low Countries in the thirteenth century and attached to men's names in bulk, producing Jankin, Wilkin, Watkin, Perkin, Hopkin and Simkin; almost all of them survive only as surnames now. Jankin is the exception, because it contracted so far that nobody could see the suffix any more, and Jack became an independent name. Jackson followed as its patronymic and is now one of the most popular American boys' names. The -sen ending of Jacksen borrows the Danish and Norwegian spelling, which has no historical connection to an English patronymic; its best year is 2010.

Meaning

son of Jack, from John, God is gracious

Jackson is a patronymic surname, son of Jack. Jack descends from Jankin, a Middle English pet form of John with the diminutive -kin borrowed from Middle Dutch, which contracted to Jackin and Jack. John is Hebrew Yohanan, God is gracious. The -sen spelling of this form is a modern American respelling, borrowed from the Scandinavian patronymic ending.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jacksen went to 12 boys in 2025, but Jaxen, Jaxsen and Jaxcen are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 177, which makes it the 752nd most-given boys’ name of the year — 6,051 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 9,650 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 142,340 for Jacksen itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
