Jaxen
Masculine · “Son of Jack”
Jaxen is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 5,647 boys against 44 girls since 1880.
Jaxen is the newest branch on a very old tree: behind it stands the English surname Jackson, "son of Jack," and behind Jack stands John. The x does the work of two letters, so a name that once needed eight now needs six, and it still lands the way it always did — two clean beats, no guesswork.

The story of Jaxen
Jackson began as a plain English patronymic surname in the medieval period — the son of a man called Jack — and Jack had already been serving as the everyday English form of John for centuries. In nineteenth-century America the surname crossed into use as a first name, as Mason, Carter and Harrison did. Much later, parents began writing the -cks- sound as a single x, and Jaxon, Jaxson and Jaxen appeared alongside the original. Jaxen is the least-traveled of those spellings, and the youngest, which is why nearly everyone carrying it is still a child or a young person.
Meaning
Son of Jack — and so, one step further back, son of John
The line is clear: Jaxen is a modern respelling of Jaxon, itself a respelling of the surname Jackson, formed from Jack, the long-standing English pet form of John (Hebrew Yohanan, "God is gracious"). The spelling is recent; the meaning behind it is not.

- counting every spelling
The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jaxen went to 122 boys in 2025, but Jaxsen, Jacksen and Jaxcen are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 177, which makes it the 752nd most-given boys’ name of the year — 707 places above the chart.
About 1 boy in 9,650 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 14,001 for Jaxen itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Daron test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jaxen's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Daron climbed just as high around 1965, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Daron's path sketches the road Jaxen is walking now.

The trade-off
- Reads correctly on first sight for English speakers; nobody has to be taught how to say it.
- Comes with Jax already built in — a short form in genuine independent use, not one you have to invent.
- Sits on a documented line back through Jackson and Jack to John, one of the most widely used names in European history.
- Familiar in sound while rare in this exact spelling, so a child is unlikely to share it in a classroom.
- Strongest showing in large, populous states, so the sound is well recognized across much of the country.
- Four spellings compete for the same sound — Jackson, Jaxon, Jaxson, Jaxen — and -on is the default people reach for. Expect a lifetime of spelling it out, usually with "x, e, n" at the end.
- The wave is very recent and now easing back, so the spelling may end up marking a fairly narrow stretch of birth years, the way Jason or Tyler do for other decades.
- Because Jaxen is so new, there are no adult or historical bearers of this exact spelling to point to — the older name Jackson carries all of that weight instead.
- If a child prefers something less unusual later, Jax and Jack are both waiting, requiring no explanation from anyone.
