The story of Monte
The principality was nearly bankrupt, and the prince opened a gaming house to save it — the quarter built around the casino was named Mount Charles after him, in Italian, and it worked well enough that income tax was abolished for residents and never reinstated. Within a generation the name meant gambling everywhere in Europe, and it has since been borrowed for a method in mathematics: a Monte Carlo simulation solves a problem by running it thousands of times with random inputs, and it is named after the casino because the technique is, quite literally, repeated gambling.

Mountain
In Italian and Spanish the word means a mountain or a hill. In American use the name may also be a clipping of Montgomery or Montague, or an independent build, and the record does not distinguish.

The Odell test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Monte's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Odell climbed just as high around 1906, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Odell's path sketches the road Monte is walking now.
Monte sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is short, cheerful and read correctly on sight.
- The word behind it is concrete and shared by two languages.
- It works as a full name or as a short form of a longer one.
- Monty is the commoner spelling and his will be written that way.
- It reads as a nickname, so a long form will be assumed.
- The spelling is recorded for both sexes, though nearly every bearer in the record is a boy.
