The story of Ross
Ross is a place before it is a person: the northern Scottish district of Ross, later Ross and Cromarty, whose name comes from the Gaelic word for a headland. Families who held or came from that land took it as a surname, and Clan Ross carried it through the Highlands and then out with the great emigrations to Canada, Australia and the United States. A parallel English strand, from Norman families called de Ros and from villages named for moorland, kept the same spelling. By the nineteenth century it had crossed the usual line from surname to first name, helped by the long-standing Scottish habit of naming sons after the mother's family.

A separate line runs from Norman French roux, 'red' or 'red-haired', carried into Britain by families named de Ros. Welsh rhos, 'moor', feeds some of the English place names too. Most bearers descend from the Scottish sense, but the three roads are genuinely tangled.
