The story of Issaiah
Hebrew theophoric names are built from a small set of verbs and a divine element, and the element can go at either end. Isaiah, Hosea, Joshua and Jesus all use the root yasha, to save; Nathaniel, Jonathan and Elnathan all use natan, to give; Hananiah, John and Elhanan all use hanan, to be gracious. Because the element can lead or follow, each verb produces at least two names that mean the same thing and look nothing alike in English. That is why Elizabeth and Jehoshabeath, Nathaniel and Jonathan, and Isaiah and Joshua are pairs. English speakers meet them as separate names arriving by separate routes at separate dates, and the underlying grammar is invisible. The doubled s of Issaiah does what most doubled consonants in respellings do, marking a syllable break rather than a short vowel.
Meaning
Hebrew Yeshayahu, Yah is salvation
From Hebrew yasha, to save or deliver, and yah, the divine name. The prophet Isaiah's book is the longest of the prophetic books and the most quoted in the New Testament. The same two elements in the reverse order give Yehoshua, Joshua, which through Greek and Latin becomes Jesus. Issaiah is an American respelling with a doubled s. It peaks in 2000.

The Victorino test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Issaiah's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Victorino climbed just as high around 1928, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Victorino's path sketches the road Issaiah is walking now.
Issaiah sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
