Imanol
Masculine · “Hebrew Immanu El”
Basque is the last pre-Indo-European language in western Europe. It was there before Latin, before Celtic, before anything else now spoken on the continent, and it is related to nothing. Imanol is the Basque form of Emmanuel, and it exists because one man in the 1890s set out to give the language a name stock of its own.

The story of Imanol
Sabino Arana, the founder of Basque nationalism, published a list of Basque given names in 1897 in an attempt to replace the Spanish calendar of saints with something specifically Basque. Some of his forms were traditional, some were adapted from Spanish or Latin, and some he invented outright on what he took to be Basque principles, including a set of month-based names and a feminine ending -e that had no historical basis. The list was contested at the time and much of it did not survive scholarly criticism, but a substantial part of it entered use and is now simply the Basque name stock: Iker, Ainhoa, Aitor, Nekane, Imanol. The project has been repeated in several small-language communities, and it raises the same question each time, of whether a name invented for a language a century ago is less authentic than one borrowed from Latin fifteen centuries ago.
Meaning
Hebrew Immanu El, God with us
The Basque form of Emmanuel, from Hebrew immanu, with us, and el, God: God with us, the name given in Isaiah 7:14 and quoted in Matthew. Basque adapted the name to its own phonology, which does not permit the initial cluster or the final consonant of the Latin form. Imanol is now a standard Basque given name. It peaks in the American data in 2001.
