The story of Idaly
Cyprus was Aphrodite's island, and she had several sanctuaries there, each giving her a local title: Paphia from Paphos, Cypris from the island itself, Idalia from Idalium. Virgil and Ovid both use the Idalian epithet, and it is through Latin poetry rather than Greek religion that the name reached modern Europe. Idalium itself was a real Cypriot city-kingdom, and its ruins have produced one of the more important finds in the study of ancient Cyprus, a bronze tablet recording a contract in the Cypriot syllabary, a script unrelated to the Greek alphabet that Cyprus went on using for centuries. Idalia and its Spanish spellings, Idaly and Idalee, reached the American records through Latin American naming.

Greek Idalion, a town in Cyprus
Idaly is a modern Spanish-American spelling of Idalia, from Idalium in Cyprus, a cult center of Aphrodite, whose epithet Idalia derives from it. A separate derivation from Germanic id, work, is sometimes offered for the name Ida and is a different word. The peak is 2003.
