The story of Jaymi
The king who gave his name to the translation commissioned it as a political settlement rather than a work of literature. Two rival English bibles were in use, each with notes that argued for a different kind of church, and the new one was to have no notes at all except explanations of the Hebrew. About fifty scholars worked in six companies, each taking a section, and the rules they were given were mostly restrictions: keep the old church words, follow the existing version where you can, do not innovate. What came out of a committee designed to avoid controversy is the most quoted book in the language, which is not how anybody expected that to go.
