Where it comes from

The story of Hasaan

After Ali's assassination in 661 his elder son Hasan was acknowledged as caliph in Iraq, with Muawiya holding Syria and refusing to submit. Rather than fight, Hasan opened negotiations and agreed terms: he stood down, Muawiya became caliph, and conditions were attached about the succession and the treatment of Ali's supporters, though the sources disagree on the details and on how far they were kept. He retired to Medina and died some years later, poisoned according to most accounts. Shia tradition regards him as the second Imam and reads the abdication as a deliberate preservation of the community; Sunni tradition treats the year as the Year of Unity. His brother Husayn made the opposite decision nineteen years later at Karbala, and the two responses have been contrasted ever since.

counting every spelling

About 1 boy in 8,943 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 244,011 for Hasaan itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is clear and unambiguously positive.
  • The historical figure is central to Islamic tradition.
  • Six letters and two syllables, easy to say.
What to consider
  • Hassan and Hasan are both commoner spellings.
  • The initial consonant does not exist in English.
  • The doubled a is a transliteration device English readers misread.
