Where it comes from

The story of Harman

The identification of Arminius with the name Hermann is a nineteenth-century guess and probably wrong: Arminius is a Roman name and the man's Germanic name is not recorded. That did not matter to the people who built the Hermannsdenkmal, completed in 1875 in the Teutoburg Forest, four years after German unification. The battle was made the founding event of a nation that had not existed at the time, and Hermann was made its first hero. The name had been ordinary in German-speaking Europe for a thousand years; after 1875 it carried a flag. German immigration brought it to the United States in quantity through the nineteenth century, and Harman, Herman and Hermann all peak in American records in the 1880s and 90s before falling away sharply after 1914.

Meaning

Germanic heri and man, army man

From the Germanic elements heri, an army or host, and man, giving army man or warrior. The same heri element appears in Harold, Herbert and the German word Heer, an army. Harman is an English spelling of Herman, and is also an English surname from the same source. It peaks in the American data in 1883.
