Hanley
Masculine · “Old English hean leah”
Hanley is given to both — 669 boys and 274 girls since 1880. See other names given to both
The element -ley meant a clearing in a forest. By the time it stopped being productive it meant a meadow, and the reason is that England had been deforested. The word did not change; the country did, and the word followed. Hanley is high clearing, in a place where there is now no wood to clear.

The story of Hanley
Leah is the single commonest element in English place names, and its semantic history is a record of land use. In the earliest charters it plainly means a clearing: a gap in woodland, often newly made, and the names built on it cluster in areas that were forested when they were coined. By the later Middle Ages the woodland had gone, cleared for arable and pasture over five centuries, and the word had drifted to mean the open ground itself. Modern English kept it as lea, a poetic word for a meadow, and as the -ley and -leigh of thousands of place names and surnames. The drift means the element cannot be translated with a single word: in a name coined in the eighth century it means clearing, and in one coined in the fourteenth it means field. Hanley is old enough to be the first.
