The story of Hanif
The Quran applies hanif to Abraham several times and insists on the point: he was not a Jew nor a Christian but a hanif, a submitter. Later Muslim tradition extended the term to a handful of named Arabians of the generation before Muhammad who are said to have rejected idols and sought a pure monotheism on their own, among them Zayd ibn Amr and Waraqa ibn Nawfal. Whether they formed anything like a movement is debated by historians, and the sources for them are late. What the word does in the text is clear enough: it establishes a category of true belief that predates all three scriptural communities and belongs to none of them, which is a theological claim about priority. As a name it carries that whole argument in five letters.
