Where it comes from

The story of Hammad

Hammad ibn Salamah and Hammad ibn Abi Sulayman were both eighth-century scholars of hadith and law, and Hammad al-Rawiya was the collector to whom the preservation of much pre-Islamic Arabic poetry is credited. The name has been used across the Arab world since. Its heaviest modern use is South Asian: Hammad is ordinary in Pakistan and among Urdu speakers. American records show it from the 1980s with Pakistani and Arab immigration and a peak in 2002, in the general pattern of a name rising with a community rather than with an event.

Meaning

One who praises constantly

From the Arabic root ḥ-m-d, to praise, in the intensive pattern faʿʿāl, which expresses habitual or repeated action. The reading is settled. The same pattern gives Ghaffar, the constantly forgiving, and Razzaq, the constant provider — both divine names — and the doubled middle consonant is what marks the form.

Two syllables, stress on the second, with the m held long — the doubled consonant is a real length in Arabic, not a spelling convention. The initial ḥ is a pharyngeal English drops.

Hammad sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2002, with 25 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Hammad went to 17 boys in 2025, but Hamad is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 41, which makes it the 887th most-given boys’ name of the year — 4,512 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 41,660 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 100,475 for Hammad itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Stinson test

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Hammad's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Stinson climbed just as high around 1927, and its whole arc is on record. The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled and the intensive form is easy to explain.
  • It is recognized across the Arab world and South Asia.
  • Two syllables and six letters travel easily.
What to consider
  • The doubled m is a real length in Arabic and is not reproduced in English.
  • The back half spells an English adjective.
  • Hammad, Hamad and Hammed are three transliterations that will be confused.
