The story of Hamid
The root ḥ-m-d is among the most productive in Arabic naming, and the family it generates — Muhammad, Ahmad, Mahmud, Hamid, Hamdi — accounts for a very large share of men's names across the Muslim world. Al-Ḥamīd being a divine name, human bearers strictly take ʿAbd al-Hamid, servant of the praiseworthy, though Hamid alone is used freely. It is common in the Arab world, Iran, Turkey, South Asia and West Africa. American records show it from the 1960s with immigration and, separately, through African American Muslim naming, with a peak in the 1980s.

Praiseworthy, or one who praises
From the Arabic root ḥ-m-d, to praise. Ḥamīd is the passive sense, praiseworthy, and is one of the ninety-nine names of God; Ḥāmid is the active sense, one who gives praise, and is the ordinary human name. The same root gives Muhammad, Ahmad and Mahmud. English transliteration collapses the two into Hamid, and which a given family intended is not recoverable from the spelling.

The Alanson test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Hamid's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Alanson climbed just as high around 1927, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Alanson's path sketches the road Hamid is walking now.
Hamid sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
