Gunther
Masculine · “Battle warrior”
Gunther is a warrior's name twice over: gund is battle and heri is an army, so the compound is battle-army, which is the kind of doubling early Germanic naming did without apology. It is also the name of a king in the Nibelungenlied.

The story of Gunther
Gundahar was a historical king of the Burgundians whose kingdom on the Rhine was destroyed by Huns in 437, and that catastrophe became the seed of the Nibelungenlied, where Gunther is the Burgundian king whose sister Kriemhild marries Siegfried. Wagner put him in Götterdämmerung. The name stayed ordinary in Germany, and German immigrants brought it to America; the American peak in 1931 belongs to those families. It declined sharply during and after the Second World War, and for most Americans under fifty the name's clearest association is a character on a 1990s sitcom rather than a Burgundian king.
Meaning
Battle warrior
From the Germanic Gundhari, from gund, battle or war, and hari, army or warrior. The reading is settled and both elements are transparent. Early Germanic names frequently doubled a sense this way; the compound means something like warrior of the battle host rather than two separate ideas.

The Lundy test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Gunther's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lundy climbed just as high around 1916, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lundy's path sketches the road Gunther is walking now.
Gunther sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The Germanic meaning is settled and both elements are documented.
- It carries one of the central figures of German medieval epic.
- Gunn works as a short form.
- The German umlaut is dropped in American records and the vowel changes with it.
- The th is not an English th, and American speakers will say it wrongly.
- The first syllable is the word gun, which is an unavoidable association in America.
