The result reads as a family name that never existed, built out of a word that has been in English use since the Reformation. It appeared on birth certificates in the 1990s and peaked in 2003.

The story of Gracen
Grace entered English naming in the sixteenth century with the great Protestant turn to abstract virtues, alongside Faith, Hope, Mercy and Prudence, and it is the only one of that group that has never gone fully out of use. The modern extension is different in kind. From the 1990s American parents began adding surname-shaped endings to existing girls' names — Gracen, Emersyn, Adisen, Ellison, Camren — because the surname sound had become the most fashionable register available. The device works because English speakers recognize -en and -son as name-endings without asking what they attach to; the ending signals a category, not a father.
Meaning
grace; favor freely given
Latin gratia means favor, thanks and pleasingness, and in Christian theology it names the unearned favor of God — which is the sense the Puritans had in mind when they made it a name. Gracen inherits that meaning entirely; the -en ending adds nothing lexical. It is worth being precise that the ending is decorative rather than patronymic: Gracen does not mean 'son of Grace' in the way Jameson means son of James, because no such surname existed to be borrowed.

The Jacky test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Gracen's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jacky climbed just as high around 1931, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jacky's path sketches the road Gracen is walking now.
Gracen sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
