The story of Gianfranco
The Mediterranean Lingua Franca, also called Sabir, was a genuine contact language used between European traders, sailors, captives and North African hosts from at least the eleventh century until the French conquest of Algeria. Its vocabulary was mostly Italian and Spanish with Arabic, Turkish, Greek and Provencal elements, and its grammar was radically simplified, with verbs in the infinitive and almost no inflection. Molière puts some in Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme. It was called Frankish because Arabic and Turkish speakers used al-Faranj, the Franks, for Western Europeans generally, a usage that dates from the Crusades and survives in Persian farangi and Thai farang. The modern sense, any language used between speakers of different tongues, is a metaphorical extension of what was once one specific pidgin spoken on one sea.
