The g in these names is soft in English and hard in German, and English never made a rule about it, which is why Gerald, Gerard, Gertrude and Gerry are pronounced inconsistently even by people who use them daily. The J spelling was the American solution — Jerry can only be said one way — and it became so common that Gerry now reads as the deliberate spelling and Jerry as the default. Both are used for either child, and Gerry in particular has served as a short form for Geraldine as readily as for Gerald.

Gerard joins the same ger with hard, brave — so the two long names share a first element and differ in the second, which is why they have been confused for a thousand years. A short form serving all three inherits from whichever a family meant, and often from none, since Gerry has been given outright for generations.
