The story of Fortino
Fortis is one of the most productive Latin adjectives in English. A fort and a fortress are strong places. Fortitude is strength of mind. Force, effort, enforce and reinforce all descend from it through French. Forte in music is loud, and a person's forte is their strength. And comfort is confortare, to strengthen greatly, which entered English in the thirteenth century meaning to encourage or fortify, not to soothe. That is the sense in which the older Bible translations call the Holy Spirit the Comforter, rendering the Greek parakletos, one called alongside, and it is why medieval writers can speak of comforting an army. The modern sense, of ease and softness, is a later drift, and it has quietly reversed the word: what once made you stronger now makes you more comfortable.
