Exavier
Masculine · “The new house”
Exavier is Xavier with an E in front — a respelling that solves a real problem, because X at the start of an English word is a genuinely awkward letter and Xavier has never had a settled American saying. The name underneath is Basque: a house, a place, and a saint.

The story of Exavier
Francis Xavier co-founded the Society of Jesus with Ignatius of Loyola and carried Christianity to India, Malacca and Japan before dying off the Chinese coast in 1552. He was canonized in 1622, and Catholic families across Europe and Latin America have used his surname as a given name ever since. Xavier reached American records early and rose steeply from the 1980s. Exavier is a much later and much smaller stream: it appears in the 1990s and peaks in the early 2000s, in the same years that Xzavier, Zavier and Xaiver were all being written down. All of them are attempts to spell a name whose first letter English has no comfortable rule for.
Meaning
The new house
Xavier comes from the Basque place name Etxeberria, from etxe, house, and berri, new — the castle of Javier in Navarre, where Francisco de Jasso y Azpilicueta was born in 1506. He took his name from the place, and the place gave its name to the Jesuit missionary the world knows as Francis Xavier. The E- of Exavier is an American addition with no meaning; it records the initial vowel that English speakers put there anyway.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Exavier's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Stony climbed just as high around 1963, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Stony's path sketches the road Exavier is walking now.
