The story of Everet
George Everest ran the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India from 1830 to 1843, a project that measured the subcontinent by triangulation over decades and eventually established the heights of the Himalayan peaks. He never saw the mountain that carries his name. His successor Andrew Waugh proposed the name in 1856 for Peak XV, arguing that no local name was in general use, which was not true: Tibetans called it Chomolungma and Nepalis Sagarmatha. Everest himself objected, on the grounds that the name could not be written in Hindi or pronounced by Indians, and was overruled by the Royal Geographical Society in 1865. He also pronounced his surname with a long first syllable, EAVE-rest, so the mountain is named after a man in a way he disliked and said in a way he did not use.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names.
