The story of Eris
Eris throws the apple inscribed 'to the fairest' among the goddesses at the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, Paris judges, and the war follows. The dwarf planet discovered in 2005 was named for her because it forced the demotion of Pluto. The name appears in American records rising through the 2010s and is in current use.
Meaning
strife, discord
From the Greek eris, 'strife' or 'discord'. Hesiod distinguishes two: one who breeds war, and one who breeds healthy competition between craftsmen. The word is ordinary Greek and the meaning undisputed. The dwarf planet Eris was named in 2006 for the argument its discovery caused.

The Claudie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Eris's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Claudie climbed just as high around 1900, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Claudie's path sketches the road Eris is walking now.
Eris sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A genuinely consequential figure of Greek myth carries it.
- Hesiod's two Erises — destructive and productive — is a real and interesting distinction.
- A dwarf planet named in 2006 carries it too.
- The meaning is discord, which some families will weigh carefully.
- The first vowel splits between two readings.
- Iris is a near-homophone with a much softer meaning.
