The story of Eris
Hesiod's Works and Days makes an unusual argument: there are two Erises, and the second is good — the rivalry that makes a potter work harder because his neighbor is doing well. The famous one throws an apple marked for the fairest into a wedding and starts a ten-year war. A dwarf planet beyond Neptune was named for her in 2006 because its discovery caused an argument about what a planet is.
Meaning
strife, discord
From Greek eris, strife or contention; Hesiod distinguishes two of them — one who causes war and one who causes healthy competition between craftsmen, which he says is the better of the pair.

The trade-off
- A settled meaning and one of the more interesting figures in Greek myth.
- Four letters and two syllables, about as easy to write as a name gets.
- The dwarf planet gives it a second and quite modern life.
- The meaning is strife, which is a large thing to hand a child.
- It is now given more often to girls, so assumptions may run that way.
- It is close to Aris and Iris in an English ear.
