Claudie does in one name what French usually needs two for: it serves as the familiar form of Claude, which in France belongs to men and women alike, and of Claudia, which belongs only to women. That is why the spelling turns up in American records on both sides.

Where it comes from

The story of Claudie

The emperor is the reason the name lasted. Claudius was written off by his own family as an embarrassment — he stammered, he limped, he was kept away from public life — and precisely because nobody took him seriously he survived the purges that killed everyone else with a claim, and became emperor at fifty. He then ran the empire competently for thirteen years, annexed Britain, and wrote histories nobody kept. The family name went into the Christian saint lists and out into every Romance language. French built Claude for both sexes, Claudia and Claudine for women, and Claudie as the familiar form that covers all of them.

Meaning

lame

The Roman family name Claudius came from a word describing a limp, and it kept that sense long after anyone was troubled by it. Roman family names frequently began as unkind descriptions and stopped being read that way within a generation.

Claudie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1918, with 113 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Claudie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is a real French name rather than an American respelling, and it is spelled as France spells it.
  • It works for a child and for an adult without changing shape.
  • It carries a Roman family name with two thousand years of documented use behind it.
What to consider
  • The spelling is recorded for boys as well as girls in the United States, and in France the parent name belongs to both.
  • It reads as a familiar form to French speakers and as a full name to American ones.
  • The meaning, once explained, is not flattering, though it stopped being heard as a description in antiquity.
