Nell
Feminine
Nell is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 27,612 girls against 98 boys since 1880.
Nell comes from a medieval mishearing. 'Mine Ellen' was heard as 'my Nellen', and the n moved from one word to the next — the same slip that turned an ewt into a newt and gave English Ned and Nan.

The story of Nell
Middle English said 'mine Ellen' where modern English says 'my Ellen', and rapid speech attached the n to the wrong word — the same process that gave Nan from Ann and Ned from Ed. Nell became a name in its own right by the sixteenth century and was carried by Nell Gwyn, the actress and royal mistress, which kept it visible. American use peaked around 1880.

Not established
Nell serves three parents. Through Ellen and Helen, the Greek origin is genuinely unsettled. Through Eleanor, the Provençal name's own origin is disputed. Through Cornelia, the Roman gens name may derive from cornu, 'horn'. The short form does not choose between them.
