Erion
Masculine
Erion is given to both — 599 boys and 113 girls since 1880. See other names given to both
Albania spent the twentieth century inventing names. After 1945 the state discouraged the Ottoman-era Muslim and Orthodox Christian name stock and encouraged names built from Albanian roots, and a whole generation of coinages entered use: Erion, Endrit, Klejdi, Arber, Ilir. It is one of the few naming systems in Europe with a deliberate, dated, state-backed break in it.

The story of Erion
Albanian is a linguistic isolate within Indo-European: it descends from the same ancestor as Greek, Latin and Sanskrit, but it has no close relatives, and the intermediate stages are undocumented. That makes its vocabulary hard to analyze, because there is nothing to compare it to. It also makes the twentieth-century name project unusual. Where other national revivals reached back into a literature, Albania largely had to build, drawing on the Illyrian past, on nature words, and on newly assembled combinations. The names that resulted, Ilir from Illyrian, Arber from the medieval name for the country, Endrit meaning bright, Erion, Enea, Klodian, are now the ordinary stock of Albanian naming and read as traditional to anyone born since. Erion appears in the American data with Albanian and Kosovar arrivals and peaks in 2008.

Not established
Erion is a modern Albanian name usually analyzed as containing er, wind, or the initial of Eri, and a second element that is not agreed. Several derivations circulate in Albanian sources and none is settled, which is expected for a name coined in the last century. Albanian forms its own branch of Indo-European with no close living relatives, so its roots cannot be checked against a sister language the way Romance or Slavic ones can.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Rein test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Erion's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Rein climbed just as high around 1953, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Rein's path sketches the road Erion is walking now.
Erion sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
