Eriana
Feminine · “most holy”
Eriana is Ariana with one vowel changed, and that single substitution is a recognized American naming move. Alissa becomes Elissa, Ariana becomes Eriana, Amelia becomes Emelia: swap the first vowel and a very common name becomes a rarer one without losing any of its familiarity. Eriana appeared on American birth certificates in the 1990s and peaked in 2003.

The story of Eriana
Ariadne's name is Cretan and pre-Greek in part, and the Italian Arianna carried it into modern European use; American Ariana rose sharply from the 1980s and became a top-hundred name. Names that popular attract variation, and the first vowel is one of the easiest places to make it: an E in place of an A leaves the rhythm and every other letter untouched, but produces a spelling that is unmistakably distinct. This is a quieter device than adding a y or an h, because it does change the sound slightly, and that small change is what makes it feel like a different name rather than a different spelling of the same one.
Meaningscholars disagree
most holy, in the Ariana reading
Ariana descends from Greek Ariadne, the Cretan princess of the labyrinth story, whose name is built from ari-, an intensifying prefix, and a second element usually read as hagnos, 'holy, pure' — giving 'most holy'. If Eriana is Ariana respelled, it carries that. But an independent reading exists: Erin, the poetic name for Ireland, with an -ana ending, which would make the name Irish by construction if not by descent. Both are plausible and the spelling does not decide.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
