Where it comes from

Our story of Kelliann

The kelvin is named after a river in Glasgow. William Thomson spent his career at the university there, and when he was made a peer he took his title from the Kelvin, the small river that runs past the campus and joins the Clyde — a common enough way of choosing a territorial designation. The temperature scale he devised, starting at absolute zero, then took the title's name, and when the international system of units was standardized the kelvin became one of its seven base units. So the unit in which physicists state the temperature of the cosmic background radiation is named, at two removes, after a short Scottish river that most people in Glasgow cross without noticing. The unit is written in lower case; the scale, being a person, keeps its capital.

The front is a familiar spelling of an Irish surname used as a given name, whose own meaning is disputed. The back is a familiar form of Anne, from the Hebrew Hannah. Neither is a formal name and nothing records which the family used day to day.

Fashion outlook

Kelliann sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves are familiar, so nothing has to be spelled out by sound.
  • It collapses to either half and both work as names.
  • Written solid it occupies one field on a form instead of two.
What to consider
  • Kellyann, Kelli Ann and Kellianne are all recorded and the spelling will need giving.
  • Neither half is a formal name, so there is no long version to fall back on.
  • Systems will split or hyphenate it without asking.
