The story of Eran
The Sasanian empire called itself Eranshahr, the realm of the Iranians, and the word derives from the self-designation of the Iranian peoples, related to the Sanskrit arya used by the Indo-Aryans of India. Europeans called the country Persia, after Pars, the province the Achaemenids came from, following Greek usage. In 1935 Reza Shah's government asked foreign governments to use Iran in official correspondence, restoring the domestic name; the request was granted and the change was widely misunderstood at the time and since. The word Aryan in its original sense is a linguistic and self-descriptive term of the Indo-Iranian peoples, and its nineteenth and twentieth-century European use as a racial category is a separate and later abuse of it, which is worth stating clearly because the coincidence of date has caused a great deal of confusion.
