Elsbeth
Feminine · “Hebrew "my God is an oath”
Elsbeth is Elisabeth with its middle removed. German and Swiss German do this to long names routinely — cut out the unstressed interior and join what is left — and the result is a name that keeps both ends of the original while losing everything between them. It is a compression, not a nickname.

From Elisheva to Elsbeth
The story of Elsbeth
Elisabeth is the wife of Zechariah and the mother of John the Baptist, which put the name into universal Christian use. What each language did with it differs sharply: English kept the front and made Elizabeth, then clipped the back into Beth and Betty. Spain and Provence lost the front and made Isabel. German and Swiss German cut the middle, producing Elsbeth and Elspeth, and then clipped further to Else and Elsa. The American 1912 peak reflects German and Swiss immigration; the name has never been common in English on its own terms.
Meaning
Hebrew "my God is an oath"
From Elisheva: el, God, plus sheva, an oath or the number seven, which in Hebrew idiom are connected because oaths were sworn sevenfold. The reading is usually given as my God is an oath or God is my satisfaction. The whole enormous family — Elizabeth, Isabel, Lisa, Betty, Elsa, Elsbeth — descends from it.

Two syllables with the stress on the first and the consonant cluster in the middle pronounced fully — lsb is unusual in English but not difficult. German gives the same, with a slightly crisper s.

- The lsb cluster is unusual and gets simplified in fast English speech.
- Elspeth is the more familiar spelling in English-speaking countries.
